- Glossy, triangular, green leaves turn yellow in the fall
- Dioecious: trees are either male or female, flowering before the leaves
- Male flowers are red and inconspicuous, female flowers are yellow, ripening in the spring
- Female trees are messy, with 'cotton' drifting

- Interesting Notes: Native to Ontario and most of North America. The leaves are rich in protein and amino acids and can be as nourishing as meat. The bark contains salicin, an ingredient in aspirin.
